That was a masterful performance! Why? Because that was real legato singing. He sang on the vowels and rarely pronounced the consonants. He emphasized the mm in “Mai tanto la vita!” for effect. This is what masters do. Many do not give MDM the credit that he so justly deserves.

Brilliant. Stunning how powerful his voice is. Del Monaco was definitely one of the greatest tenors ever.

It’s probably right.
However, he is/was a self-absorbed singer, which often leads to that he seems to miss his surroundings, which in turn leads to a kind of insensitivity.

This recording should be heard by anyone who claims that Del Monaco had to scream all the time. Here we have the greatest dramatic tenor of the past century singing sweetly with a sensational pp and a snooth lyric line.
