I’m going to Berlin next summer, so I’m planning the trip now. Is it important to find a hotel in Mitte or would a near by region be just as easy because the metro is quick and easy there?

Public transport (U-Bahn and S-Bahn, underground and city train) are quick and easy. Stay within Zone A of Berlin transport close to an U-Bahn or S-Bahn stop and everything will be fine.
Most of the main sights are within an area between the stops Hauptbahnhof, Oranienburger Strasse, Alexanderplatz, Warschauer Strasse, Hallesches Tor and Potsdamer Platz.
But apart from that Berlin is very spread out, you’ll be using public transport frequently to get around and see everything. So you’ll have a Berlin AB pass anyway, you might as well use it to get to a cheaper hotel near Ostbahnhof or Zoo.
If you want a budget hotel that is a bit different, I can recommend staying at the Ostel. See for more info.
