This is classic and full of great moments, mostly Ross’, of course. She is what Callas was a decade before, but what happened? Listening to her rhythms and mastery of the Bellini line, it baffles me that she didn’t make it to Mt. Olympus like her predecessor. Del Monaco is a stud, short on nuance (“sfumatura di labbre”) but long on charisma and stage presence. Plus he is striking in that costume. Elinor Ross kicks Caballé’s ass, and Gencer’s as well. Superbe dame!
is this video available invhs or dvd?
i have a copy of this recording
anorexic pollione… no way he could have seen to this norma
Elinor Ross has a wonderful voice, but her Italian is so and so…. mostly compared with del Monaco diction…
Love Ross every since I saw her as Turandot at the Met in the early 1970s. The voice was huge. Thanks for this video.
What an unbelievable singer! so outrageously under-rated!!!!
HAHAHAHA so true mr Del Monaco did but it was one of the best opera were he could use all his Dramatic voice and acting the other opera he love was Otthelo
“it’s a pity Mr Del Monaco obviously thinks the opera is called POLLIONE…” – hahaha! Golden words!

Lucky you. I wish I had all those recordings.
Berlin,1967
I adore Elinor Ross-I have her live recordings of AIDA,ALZIRA,LA GIOCONDA,NORMA(complete video and audio from one year earlier),BALLO,FORZA,DON CARLO,TROVATORE,TOSCA and TURANDOT.She was genial, divine and incredible in each mentioned role.Rich, velvet and creamy voice with wonderful top and without any problems, dramatic possibilities as well as lyric warmth!!!
I’d never heard of this singer – she’s wonderful! Reminds me of Rita Hunter, the English Wagnerian soprano, who did some performances as Norma in Australia in a production originally mounted for Sutherland. Thanks coloraturafan, this is great stuff! And yes, it’s a pity Mr Del Monaco obviously thinks the opera is called POLLIONE…
The bastard had to hold the last note the longest.
What “many” sopranos recorded and never sang the high D (of course it’s not written, but it’s exciting if a soprano has it!) in performances at the end of this trio?…
oh I SO agree with you! As though he had SO much more to offer than the other two singers. That kind of ego RUINS performances for me, and I think it’s beyond juvenile to “have the last word” or whatever just to act like you’re better than your colleagues. It smacks of insecurity and it’s completely disingenuous. I’d be willing to bet he didn’t do it in rehearsal.
Hi – This is WONDERFUL! Truly AWESOME! Where can I get hold of the complete performance? I would rob, still and murder to get it if I can’t buy it!!!! It is stellar – comparable to Caballe’s 1974 Orange….
Wonderful and exciting!
A wonderful surprise! It is all very “in your face” and immediate. LOVE IT! I really enjoy opera when it is very powerful and “out there.” These “sweet interspective performances” really leave such great scenes as this dead. Ross is really exciting! As for the missing high D (not written in the score), many sopranos, though they recorded it, NEVER sang it in performance. It is tradition to end with the three notes descending from the high B. A very exciting performance!
Elinor Ross was indeed wonderful. Together with Lucine Amara, she was the soprano in the 60’s and 70’s who always jumped in for the indisposed “stars,” sang ten times better than they ever dreamed of singing, but never got the real credit she deserved either from the public or the excessively nasty and vicious NY critics of the time – Alan Rich, Robert Jacobson (God rest his soul) and Martin Bernheimer come immediat4ely to mind.
del Monaco to me is annoying in his total self indulgence, and even if the voice is spectacular his technique and pitch are already faultering here.
Ross is a very interesting surprise! Brava! Even without high D at the end!
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO….
Mario Dio ti benedica. Antonello
